The unthinkable has happened... I tried to create a character and I failed.
Runequest is one of the oldest and most influential RPGs of all time. There are a LOT of games I'll be doing which are inspired by it. The mythical world of Glorantha is one of the best and most detailed fantasy worlds ever created.
But it was just too much! There are so many things to track - your Runes, your characteristics, your Passions, your Skills (a whole page of skills), your family history, your extended family, your equipment, your rune magic, your spirit magic, your sorcery... it was a long and time-consuming process, but after a few hours working at it, a really cool character was starting to develop. But it was just too much. It was when I got to Spirit Magic that it became too much and I had to give up. What is spirit magic? How does it work? I don't know!
Watching me struggle through this, my wife commented that any chance of her ever playing Runequest with me had just vanished. Well, so has any chance of me ever running it. Should I sell off the books? But it is a really cool world! Which is detailed in almost exhausting anthropological detail... there's a ten book series on religion, that's not intimidating at all...
I'm striking Runequest from my 31 games, and I'm replacing it with HeroQuest Glorantha, which is a more rules-light game. I'll try making the same character and I'll see what happens.
If you're interested, here's the almost-finished character sheet.
