Day Three: Bunnies and Burrows

Today we're making rabbits!

Bunnies & Burrows first came out in 1976, making it one of the very earliest RPGs - in fact, you might call it the original indie RPG! This is the Third Edition, from 2019. It's heavily inspired by Watership Down. Players take the role of non-anthropomorphized rabbits, or other small creatures. There's a strong focus on rabbit-related activities, like eating your own droppings to restore hit points, and minigames, like escaping from predators. In a world where everything is out to get you and you have no real combat skills to speak of, there's a real emphasis on problem-solving over fighting.

Character Creation

Very simple and very old-school. I rolled 3d6 in order for each of my eight different statistics. Each statistic governs a range of different aspects of rabbit life - rather than write it all out in full, I put keywords on the sheet. There are eight different character classes, one for each statistic. There's also a non-rabbit small critter that you can be instead. Since I had a good Mysticism score, I decided that my character would be a Seer (the alternative was an Opossum). I have access to two special abilities immediately - I can Feign Disease to discourage predators from chasing me, and I can Trance to meditate on a total of two words a day. With my very low Charisma score, I imagine Dreambriar being a bunny witch, a strange outsider who everyone tolerates rather than likes, who's quite prickly and scary back.

Final Thoughts

Ever since I had pet rabbits, I've wanted to try this game. I have the book, I have the adventures, I have bunny-loving friends... one day it will happen! (I think 'this is cool, I want to play it one day' is going to be my most common final thought throughout this series...)
