Day Thirteen: Magical Kitties Save The Day

Today's entry is a sad one. Trigger warning: pet death

Magical Kitties Save The Day is a rules-light system about cats with magical powers. They belong to a human, who has problems, and the town also has problems. It's up to the cats to use their magical powers to help everyone. It's a very cute game that makes a perfect introduction for to role-playing for children or new players. I appreciate the graphic novel format solo adventure that teaches you the rules of the game. It includes a quite comprehensive setting, River City, with lots of plot hooks and a cute sample adventure in it about animated books in a library after hours. There's also lots of supplements which add more hometowns and genre options, which is nice.

Character Creation: On May 13th, my beautiful darling cat Nimue passed away. I've decided to recreate her as my character for Magical Kitties, because Nim was certainly magical for me and everyone who met her. I miss her infinitely.

You have three stats in Magical Kitties and you assign a 3 (best), 2 and 1 (worst) amongst them. Nim was not very good at being a cat, but she was very good at loving people, so I've given her 3 Cute, 2 Cunning and 1 Fierce. This is how many dice you roll when using that ability. All cats also have a Talent and a Flaw. I've given Nim Empathic (+1 die to understand others) and Indecisive (I earn a Kitty Treat, which is this game's meta-currency when she fails to make up her mind.) Finally, all cats have a Magical Power, which gives them new abilities, and +2 dice to a check when it would be useful. Nim could be at times so sneaky that we'd say she could teleport - her favourite use for it was to teleport between someone's legs when they weren't paying attention to try and trip them up. Character creation took in total about five minutes; it's deliberately very quick and easy. You can randomly roll for all details as well, if you prefer, and I appreciate the option.

Final Thoughts: This is a really cute game. I enjoyed running it. One of my players found it a bit too light, and I think it might struggle to sustain a long-term game for experienced players. I think it's great for one shots, and definitely recommended for cat lovers.
